Transforming 5 departments at Nottingham City Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre with the ERSS

The Customer

Nottingham City Hospital is a large part of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The
Trust, consisting of Nottingham City Hospital, Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) and Ropewalk
House was formed in 2006 and is now one of the biggest and busiest acute Trusts in
England. With 14,500 staff providing care to over 6.5million residents of Nottingham and the
surrounding counties, the Trust has achieved a national and international reputation for
many specialist services, including stroke, renal, neurosciences, cancer services and
trauma.

Their Challenges

As with many Trusts, one of the main challenges Nottingham faced was lack of space. In the
CPU, Cleaning Stores, and Ward Stores across both Nottingham City Hospital and QMC,
each team was struggling to store their equipment, from lack of space, in a safe and
organised manner. With restrictions on space and layout in these departments, our ERSS
Specialist Paul Franks made several site visits to ensure we could provide the most efficient
equipment for the job.

Our Solution

Hupfer’s Easy Rider Shelving System (ERSS) was the ideal solution to the challenges each
department was facing. Offering completely interchangeable shelves available in 4 different
depths (300mm, 400mm, 500mm and 600mm) these shelves can be manufactured from
polymer, stainless steel or aluminium depending on your application.

The shelves can be arranged and rearranged with ease, without the need for tools. The
Easy Rider Shelving System allows one person to access each area and easily navigate any
heavy goods stored on them single-handedly. It is ideal for use in catering, ward, kitchens,
walk-in cold and freezer rooms, and many more!

ERSS

The ERSS shelving system helps the end-user use their space efficiently and effectively.
The design makes it very easy to rearrange the unit quickly to meet changing demands. Its
unique foot-operated brake system offers additional safety when retrieving goods.

Paul visited each department at Nottingham City Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre so
that he could fully understand their storage frustrations and offered a bespoke fit for each
area. With different demands across the departments, Hupfer were proud to be able to offer
uniquely built systems to each in order to fully satisfy their individual needs.

The Results

Across all 5 departments we were able to implement space-saving solutions that have
contributed to the smooth running of all areas. The ERSS not only reduced the amount of
double handling but has allowed three rooms to be condensed into one in the Cleaning
Stores department thanks to clever installation and re-use of an existing shelving system.
This has then created more space for other departments in need, in one instance for
Laundry Services.

Sustainability

Sustainability is at the forefront of every project undertaken by Hupfer, we will always
endeavour to repurpose existing equipment to reduce cost and waste where possible. This
has the potential to create more space for any other departments/areas in need.

What does the ERSS system mean?

E – Efficiency
R – Robust
R – Reliable
